West Sayville Fire Department

ABOUT US

The West Sayville Fire Department is an all volunteer community organization charged with protecting life and property within the West Sayville - Oakdale Fire District. This comprises an area which includes all of Oakdale, West Sayville; and part of Bohemia (south of Sunrise Hwy) and Sayville (west of and including Chester Rd & the creek to the east of Hillside Av). It is staffed by over 100 of your neighbors, who respond to all types of emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The department is comprised of four companies which operate out of two fire  houses. The main house is located at 80 Main St (Montauk Hwy) in West Sayville, and Station I is located on Montauk Hwy in Oakdale. In the event of an emergency, our members are notified via pagers and respond to the firehouse to gather their equipment and respond to the incident. Our members display blue lights in their personal vehicles when responding to an alarm. If you see them, or one of our emergency vehicles please offer them the right of way by pulling to the right and coming to a stop. Remember they are responding to an emergency which involves a member of our community, and time may be a matter of life and death.

The Chief of the Department has complete authority over all emergency situations, as well as the day to day operations of our organization. Any questions regarding the organization should be directed to the chief, either by phone, mail or e-mail. Please follow the contact us links on the Community Resource page for contact information. We also have three Assistant Chiefs who work at the direction of the Chief, and who can assume his duties in his absence.

The fire department receives most of its operating capital through its annual fund drive and other fund raising activities it holds throughout the year. Please visit or Fund Drive/Donations link for important information on our fund drive program. Also, please check our Fund Raisers link for upcoming events - and consider supporting us by attending.

The fire department DOES NOT COLLECT / OR RECEIVE TAXES, this is a function of the fire district. Although most people do not differentiate between the fire district and the fire department, they are two unique organizations. Although the West Sayville - Oakdale Fire District is also responsible for providing for fire protection to the residents of the fire district, their job is different from the department. While the department supplies the manpower, so to speak, the district supplies the equipment, buildings, etc...

The fire district receives its operating capital by levying taxes. Those monies are expended at the direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners of the West Sayville - Oakdale Fire District. The board consists of five commissioners who serve a fire year term of office. Each year the residents of the district have an opportunity to elect one person to fill one of these positions. The commissioners have sole discretion in expending the tax monies. They use this money to purchase trucks, firefighting gear, equipment, buildings and also to maintain the same. For a more complete explanation follow the Fire District vs. Fire Department link. Questions regarding these items should be directed to the Board of Fire Commissioners, whose contact information appears under the Contact us link.

We are always looking for additional volunteers to help us protect our neighbors. The pay stinks - but the rewards are great. If you are interested please follow the Becoming a Member link for information.
