Becoming a Member

Information on becoming a member of the West Sayville Fire Department

Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the West Sayville Fire Department. Any person of the age of 17 and who has not reached their fifty-first birthday, who is a citizen of the United States, is of good moral character and resides within the limits of the West Sayville - Oakdale Fire District may apply for membership. If you are, or know somebody,  between the ages of 8 and 17 you may be interested in our Junior Fire Department program at this link.

If accepted for membership, new members are given extensive training in all aspects of firefighting and rescue services. The initial training period last from 12-18 months, and involves class room and hands on training. During that period, referred to as probationary training, members are limited in their firefighting functions. After successfully completing the probationary training, and being accepted as a full member of the department, members participate in all aspects of fire and rescue services. Training continues throughout  the firefighters entire career through attendance at drills and training sessions.

Members are required to attended a minimum number of fires, drills, meetings and other functions to remain members. We respond to all types of emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Obviously all the members will not be available all the time. Work, family and other commitments are expected to limit each members activities. Luckily our diverse and large membership allows for adequate coverage around the clock.

It is often said that the pay stinks, but the rewards more than make up for it. There is no greater satisfaction than knowing you have helped someone in need - that you have made a difference in your community.

To apply you must complete an application, submit to a physical examination by the fire district physician (at the districts expense), and submit to an arson investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.

If this sounds like its for you, or you have further questions, please e-mail your name, address and contact number, and the best time to reach you to the Chief in Charge of Membership (click here). The Chief will contact you to answer your questions, and/or start your application process.
